Arlo Doorbell camera

Hi there,

there is a product that I nearly purchased, sent to me from iPhone magazine, it's called "Skybell WIFI Doorbell"

Which is obviously a doorbell with a camera that communicates with your router & smartphone, and not only can you see the person, you can talk to them too. Plus it was waterproof. I thought I really want something like that, but what stopped me buying it was it was not totally wireless like the Arlo systems I have bought. It needs to connect to a physical power source, not battery powered, so given that total wireless was the main reason for my netgear Arlo purchases, I couldn't buy that doorbell system.

I really hope that Netgear and their Arlo team come to up with something similar, as I would definitely buy one if it was available.

Cheers

Ross

I've been following this for a long time.  You'd think after 3 years & >90 comments that Arlo would respond with a product in development.  This is dissapointing - i'd like to expand my Arlo capabilities to this area.

I just purchased the Skybell Trim Plus HD Doorbell and I love it. I have an older house with a mechanical chime, so all I had to do was change out the existing door button and set the Skybell up.

No lag time.

Every movement on my front porch gets recorded with a notification. I am far enough away from the street that the cars don't trigger it but there is an inexpensive mount on ebay to allow one to mount the doorbell at more of an angle.

I get a notification and click on it and the app opens immediately and I can view the activity live.

It integrates very well with Smartthings so I can also activate my Arlo cameras when there is motion.

They don't currently have a battery operated doorbell, but if you have power to the doorbell button, with an adapter kit it can be used with a digital chime.

NO MONTHLY FEES.

It is very strange that there is not yet a Arlo doorbell...

My first post, firstly appologies for the spelling, this is the only forum I have been on that does not have automatic spelling adjustment? I also cant add images as the post button is in an unscrollable area of the browser!

I am considering getting a Ring type doorbell, which would certainly be money in the Arlo account had they developed a product like this. I am sure there is a good reason Arlo has not brought out a doorbell camera, but it would make an amazing addition to the range. I can only guess they are waiting for other competitors to iron out the wrinkles, have copyright issues (as only a few western companies have done this - cheap China products dont adhere to copyright laws), or its econically unfeasible (i.e. it needs a different kind of camera lens). This thread is pretty old, so my guess that this wont happen!

As per all the other comments on here, I have my front camera on my drive (out of reach) and although it is great for notifying me someone is on the drive I cant really see a  lot of the person, especially if wearing a hoodie (lets face it if I was going rob a house thats what I would wear!). The picture is OK, but I find my Maisi (MIPC) camera better quality, one has a wider field of view & it pans and tilts and has 2 way sound (I have 3 types from this range). You cant beat the wirless adaptability and reliability of the Arlo though as it captures everything and you dont have to worry about reliability (unlike the terrible MIPC app). I often then log on to my Maisi if i want to look further, but i suspect the Arlo Q or Arlo Pro is a beter camera option.

What I want to do is move away from using two systems (and Apps). I would pay good money to add an Arlo doorbell system with a seperate mainbs plug in box, so that it also acts as a normal doorbell when the system is not armed. I have just tried to use my existing peep hole, but to no avail as its just bright light. I was hoping i could build up a little box behind the door with a mount in it.

What I wanted to do is use take apart, conceal (somehow) my cheaper Maisi camera in the porch area. I have a UPVC door so cant mount it into the door and there is no where else that is not blinding obvious from the road. I am concious that I dont want my house looking like a prison, as it kind of advertise there is obviously something worth nicking (This would be the opposite if i lived in a deprived, high crime area). I get a lot of deliveries, but someone stealing a parcel is very unlikely in my neighbourhood so that's not really a threat. I will lookinto to replacing the viewing eye part of the door with the camera, I can then run the guts through the tube and put the rest of the electronics in a box inside the house. The only issue then is running power to it, so it may be a lot easier just to get a doorbell. Smiley Very Happy

At the end of the day a camera system makes a great deterrent from any targetted/opportunistic attack. A good thief will do an active reccie and possibly even case the address for a matter of weeks, so if its only visible when the thief gets close to the door, you will capture a great image of them before they realise they have been outsmarted and scarper (hopefully to never return).

I will see how I get on with my Arlo & Maisi combo for now and possibly explore a cheaper doorbell option as i wont hold my breath that Arlo come up with anything anytime soon!

I would buy Arlo Camera system if it would include an optional peephole camera.

ChannelNews understands that one of these products will be a front door camera to take on Ring which was acquired recently by Amazon.

I hope that Arlo comes up with this product much like Ring soon before Amazon moves in and displaces them in this space. Seems like an obvious product / solution extension for Arlo. Specially since they have the connectivity tech and just about all the components  for this.

The original post is over two years old.  And still no doorbell option.  Strange.

Perhaps they've decided to surrender that part of the market (doorbell cam) to Ring and Nest?
