I recently charged my Arlo Essential, actually only second time I've charged it, but now it will only take snapshots. I turned off auto-low power mode and set the video quality to best. The routine is setup to record. Can't figure out what else to change to make it actually record video again. Snapshots are pointless.

Since I charged my doorbell it’s only taking snapshots- it’s not on low power mode… any ideas please?

Make sure that under modes your device rules show to take a video and not just a snapshot.

Have you checked your modes and rules? If that's not the issue, try removing the camera from your account and add it back. Any better?

Yes, per my description, I checked and adjust modes and made sure rules were set. Neither should have changed since all I did was charge the camera. If saying I need to disconnect it to make it start recording video again is honestly a bull**bleep** solution. All I did was charge the damn thing, have never had this happen with any of the other cameras I own.

Why would charging it cause me to have to remove it and add again? I'm not going to do that cause I don't want to have to do that EVERY TIME I charge it.

Lately, my 2nd gen camera has been only taking snapshots. It is *only* the second gen camera, none of the first gens are doing this.

Troubleshooting I've already done:

  • checked modes & all are set to record video
  • video is set to best video
  • battery is charged to 97%, but it does it even at fully charged
  • Deleting the camera and adding

Are you still seeing this same behavior?

  • Change recording mode: Open the Arlo app, select your camera, and adjust the recording mode to a higher setting that allows for continuous video recording.
  •  Review motion detection settings: Verify that your motion detection settings are configured correctly to ensure the camera is triggering recording events appropriately.

I am having the same problem. The camera had went dead and after recharging, all we get is snap shots.  I too have looked at all the settings and do not know what is causing this behavior.  I have looked at the live view several times and that appears to be working properly, just not the recording upon motion.  I have not taken the camera off of the account and readded.

@Tiger4Life can you dm me the serial number of the Essential 2 that you are seeing this on.

@joed_cny  can you please dm me the serial number of the device you are seeing this with as well.

I was having the same issue. If you go into the app open the settings tab on the camera giving you issues. There is a toggle switch that allows you to turn the camera on and off. Turn it off and then turn it back on and it should start recording again.

I am having the exact problem after charging my doorbell. I checked the rules under mode and it’s on record. I checked all other settings. Any other advice? Very frustrating.

Unfortunately that didn’t fix my camera.

The camera started to work again after several days, I didn't change anything from my prior statements, so unsure why it worked one way and then decided to start being normal again, but it did.

I am having the exact same issue - after charging, the cameras are only taking Snapshots, which is totally useless… tried turning them off and back on, tried adjusting the record time etc, but they still only take snapshots… almost ready to return them for a refund!!

@joed_cny Same with me. Mine started working again over the weekend.

@DGAus   I have wanted to return these ever since I got them. I have some Pro 4’s and have really liked them but the Essential cameras have caused me problems since day one. I should have returned them.

I went into my camera that was only recording snapshots and hit the manual record button and took about a 5 second video. After that it started recording video again. Not sure why it worked but it did. Hope this helps

Can you try toggling on the Auto Low Power Mode in Power Management?

@DGAus can you send me a screenshot of the feed where it is showing the screenshots instead of the recordings?

Thank you

I'm having this same behavior. It began after the camera had gone below 10% battery and automatically entered low power mode.

Toggling the camera and low power mode off/on had no effect.

Did you try restarting the camera from the app?
