I am all at once not getting a recording when motion is detected (it has previously worked for 4 months). After some research I noticed that the option of recording video upon detection is now "grayed out". How do I fix? Thank you.

To have cloud recording, you require a subscription. Do you have an active subscription. The camera came with 3 months of free subscription

There is no lifetime subscription. I am thinking you googled for Arlo support and reached a scam support site.
