Have you checked the transformer output? Maybe it's a bad transformer, not the doorbell.

Also, are you sure it was a surge? Many folks mix up terminology between surge and power loss/brownout as well as short- and open-circuits.

Thanks for the quick response.  I live in a rural area.  We have occasional power losses.  The 2 electricity spikes were around 1 a.m.   Within a couple minutes the power was out for about 2 hours.  I was on my computer at the time of the spikes.  I have checked the transfer voltage and it is between the 16 to 24 volts that is required to power the doorbell.  I also installed the power kit on the doorbell chime in the living room as per the instructions.  I checked the voltage after the suppressor was installed.  I have been thinking about putting in a surge protector between the transformer and the house power supply.  this would just be a power strip that contains the surge protector.  I have not checked the transformer but I assume it is 10VA.   The house is a little over 5 years old.  At this time the video doorbell is working as expected.

That should help, though an inexpensive (and small) UPS would also work, and would provide power during the outages.

Though surges can damage other equipment - including refrigerators and other appliances.  If this is happening a lot, you might look into getting a whole-house surge protector installed.
