Is it required that it be hardwired or is this optional?

wellfleetion,
Hardwiring is not optional. To install Arlo Video Doorbell, users must have a wired doorbell and chime with existing electrical wiring, voltage between 16V AC and 24V AC, and a 10VA transformer.

Indeed.
I just realized this once it arrived.
I would like to point out that NO WHERE in the marketing pieces, on the web site, or during any review, was this mentioned.
Only when the box arrived can I clearly see the product is ACTUALLY called the "Arlo Wired Video Doorbell".
Its more than a little annoying that Arlo hid this little gem in all their marketing. Coming from the existing Arlo doorbell, and having a completely wireless Arlo Ultra video system, it never dawned on me this thing would need to be hardwired into my door.

Does not integrate with existing Arlo Pro base stations and requires a paid subscription to access content. I won't be purchasing this.

I really noticed the difference with the new firmware release that introduced "Arlo Foresight", the feature that lets you see what triggered a motion event before it happened. The recordings start maybe 3 seconds earlier than they used to.

Chriso1113,
Arlo Video Doorbell is designed to be hardwired and used with mechanical or digital AC-powered chimes. For more information, take a look here: What mechanical and digital chimes are compatible with my Arlo doorbell?

Don't purchase unless you want to pay a monthly subscription fee. It's worthless without it.

BUT, you will need some energy source to the video doorbell.
I bought an LANMU energy Adapter of 18V
If you decide to use without an existing doorbell you can syncronize your arlo video doorbell with a arlo chime or any amazon echo show, or echo dot to hear the doorbell inside your house.
