Manual recording is only available through live view. Automatic recording is what happens when you use modes. By default the Armed mode is enabled and used. You can verify that recording is enabled by looking at the running men for each camera in the Devices tab. If they're black, recording is enabled. Gray means disarmed and nothing will be recorded.
