I have had a quick play in the motion detection but found the only setting is for sensitivity.
so, firstly any recommendations on sensitivity perecent to avoid too many false alerts
and second, is it possible to create a zone within the viewable picture?

On the Arlo cams, no...even if you shrink the view in pan/zoom the PIR detects the entire field of view
On the Q cam you can set up to 2 or 3 active zones.
