The new Arlo Q has bidirectional audio, hence the request. The original cameras have no audio. The app is part of the total upgrade process to get ready for Q.

I understand the new cameras have audio, but still don't understand why the upgrade needs access to the mobile phone microphone.

Because the audio is bidirectional for Q. You can speak through the Q using push to talk from the app or browser.
