how much power does the base station need / use ?

12v DC and the suppy outputs  @ 1.5amp coaxial plug with center positive. ...so a guess would be it really only draws about 1 amp +/-

As a PS... the reason for the extra in the power supply is prob for the USB ports ( in case of use ) as the supply would need to have  extra for them.
