Hello,

Is it possible to assign a static IP to the Arlo base station?

Thanks,

Sure. Like any other device it can be done in your DHCP server, likely your router. Locate the device in your router's web interface ( look for VMB3010) and use the MAC address to assign a static IP. The Arlo will still be using DHCP but the router will fix it to your desired address.

Is it possible to provide a static IP without a DHCP server? Wanted to use this at our data center for simply monitoring racks.

No, you'll need to use the DHCP server to assign the address since you have no access to the base to manually configure it.

Wow, would have been nice to know this before I bought the product. No where does it mention that a DHCP server is a minimum requirement! Most network devices allow you to manually assign a IP address. Nice going Netgear!!

It's needed for security.  If you had access to the base, it could possibly be hacked.

Haha, seriously! Using a DHCP is more of a security risk, not to mention the camera is attached to a magntic base that anyone can easily just remove and walk away with!

Haha. Seriously, yes.  What makes you think setting a static IP makes any difference?

DHCP is more of a security risk then Staitc. Most data centers or computer rooms do not run DHCP in the rooms. Anyone that plugs a device into a switch will get a  DHCP address and then could scan network for systems. Static address are more secure as you would have no ideal what address to set your device too for getting on the network. Basic network security 101.

give it  rest.  the arguement which is better has been around since tcp/ip exists.   Having a statip IP does not make you secure.

The Arlo, like many other devices, allows only DHCP  If you think fixed is better, there's a recommendations/ suggestions page for that.

Arguing it on this forum is just a waste of people's time (however the person who first asked if you could assign a fixed IP address was asking in the right place)
