Why do I have to buy a plan to record anything on my essential cameras?

That’s because you actually downgraded to a camera that doesn’t support the 7days free cloud service.

 

Any arlo camera model after the pro2 requires a paid subscription to support cloud recordings and additional subscription for seperate locations.
