Why cant i pick up my cameras on my phone when I'm away from the house

more info needed... phone, os, what have you tried ??

My phone is Android and i have tried connecting to my alerts when i get them but it tells me that its not available at this time try back later but when i get back to my house it works fine i thought that was the whole idea of having cameras to be able to see what's going on when I'm away from home thank you
