PIR motion detectors aren't very good when you move directly towards them. If you imagine multiple beams coming out, the heat signature is easier to detect if it moves across the field. I'll add a link in a picture
So best to position the camera off to one side. I actually have 2 cameras that cover my driveway. One looking down it and one looking across it. Each one is set to record as well as trigger the other camera (using 4 rules in the custom mode). This works really well but obviously means 2 cameras covering the same area

Can you clarify how you do this : "I actually have 2 cameras ... Each one is set to record as well as trigger the other camera (using 4 rules in the custom mode)." What are the 4 rules in the custom mode? I want to create a mode where both cameras record when either camera detects motion first. Is that possible?

in case you dont know how to make rules read up in the FAQ.
Then, lets just call the cams A and B
make rules if cam A detects motion start recording cam A
if cam B detects motion start recording cam B
if cam A detects motion start recording cam B
if cam B detects motion start recording cam A

Additionally, I'll add that my rules have it so when cam A motion causes cam A to record, it's for 60 seconds or whatever and when Cam A causes Cam B to record, it's for 75 seconds (or whatever). And do vice versa. This way you can see that if the recording on Cam B is 75 seconds long, it was actually Cam A that detected the motion originally. It works really well 🙂
