I have the Arlo wired doorbell (AVD1001) and want to connect it with a plugin transformer 18V - 500mA. With this, the doorbell works properly, only the doorbell does get really hot. Even after a few hours it feels really warm. Is this common or do I need a 1A transformer to fix this?

The doorbell itself decides how much current to draw. Upgrading  to a 1A transformer would allow even MORE current to be  drawn, increasing heat, but still, the doorbell is the determining factor. So, no, don't upgrade.

Since the doorbell is powered at all times, some heat is expected. The ambient temp may well raise this as well as if exposed to the sun. "Hot" is relative but it certainly shouldn't hurt you nor melt the plastic. If you have an IR temperature gun you could see what the surface temp really  is.
