I have an Arlo essential wired doorbell and thus far I haven't had any success wiring it up where it will ring the bell when pressed. I tried wiring it in a couple of different ways, but either the bell rings constantly, or constantly switches on and off.

I don't have a chime box, but instead have a 24v transformer and a simple bell. I have two wires going to the doorbell button.

I was thinking something like this, where the transformer would feed constant power to the Arlo, and the circuit would only close on the bell when the button was pressed, but this didn't work. I'm wondering if there's an issue with the power kit or if the issue is with the circuit itself?

The correct wiring is to put the powerkit across the bell, not in series with it.

The purpose of the power kit is to allow power to flow through the circuit all the time without ringing the bell/chime.  So it bypasses the bell when the doorbell isn't pressed.

This will work with most chimes, but it might not work with your bell.  If it doesn't, you'll need to install a compatible chime instead.
