I have the AVD1001B doorbell camera which I refuse to pay the over priced subscription fee's for.  I have it setup with my local hub station which is the original Gen 1 version (VMB4000).  I am unable to record locally with it but all my Gen 1 Arlo cameras still record fine.  I have seen a couple posts on forums mentioning it's possible.  Is anyone able to do this?

Your legacy Arlo cameras were sold with 7-day free cloud storage.  The videos you are seeing in the app and on my.arlo.com are all saved in the Arlo Cloud.

Arlo stopped offering free cloud storage on new camera models back in 2018, and the AVD1001 does not have that feature.

Your VMB4000 base supports local recording, but does NOT support playback.  The ONLY way to see the local recordings is to eject the storage from the app, and then connect it to a PC for viewing.  If your doorbell is connected through the base station, then you will see videos from the doorbell when you do that.

There are two smarthubs (VMB4540 and VMB5000) that do support playback, so one option is to purchase one.

There are significant limitations:

  • videos are only available in the app (not my.arlo.com)
  • videos are only available from the primary account (not friend accounts)
  • no thumbnails - videos need to be downloaded to your phone before you see anything
  • no ability to make manual recordings or snapshots
  • remote access requires router setting changes that some find difficult - and which don't work with some internet service providers.

Of course there are other subscription features - particularly activity zones and smart notifications.

Thank you for the info!  Guess I'll just live with this issue till I find a non subscription solution down the road.  Not purchasing anymore Arlo products again.
