It should. The Chime 2 doesn't connect to a base, and the wired doorbell can connect either to your home wifi or a base.

I misread your post, and assumed you meant the AVD1001 (wired video doorbell).
The audio doorbell (AAD1001) does need a base station.

Let clarify what I have. I installed an Arlo Wired Video Doorbell - Black SKU: AVD1001B-100NAS connected via wifi to my router. It fails to work w/ my mechanical chime. I want place the Arlo chime in a location that allows me to hear when the doorbell is pushed.

Tech support might possibly have been confused on what you have.
The Chime 2 doesn't use a base, and it is compatible with the AVD1001.(Arlo Wired Video Doorbell). https://kb.arlo.com/000062573/Arlo-Chime-2-FAQ
