Arlo Video Doorbell 2nd Gen (AVD3001 and AVD4001) is not yet compatible with Base Stations/SmartHubs. This feature is planned for a future firmware release.

Well, I think it’s safe to say this is pure service deflation innit?

we all get lured in and the it’s the old bait and switch right? It’s not a cheap product to start with but ,as in many other cases, it gets more expensive and also worse at the same time. I like the products but not the big picture.

Come on, @JamesC . Give us something.

Unless you pay.. you'll just have an extra VIEW o ly camera.  Slowly phase to another platform. The old doorbell half works with a lag that's so long the person would have left before it comes up.

When I got the camera I set it up immediately and gave it a run for its money and it was fine. No lag, no issues at all. Well it is amusing in a way that on the DAY my free trial ended, my doorbell became laggy as hell. The success rate for connecting to it within 20 seconds is around 40-50 %. And I have a strong connection to my fairly new archer router.

Hi,

I know this has been discussed many times in other postings, but we are in September 2024 and I wonder if there is any update on the firmaware/software release to be able to sync my two Essential 2nd Generation Cameras with the Base Station Smarthub. Otherwise, there is no point to keep these camaras or buying the base station for the on-prem recordings. Pushing for Cloud base subscritions is not an option I would like to go for.

Thank you.

Miguel

Almost one year later, no update is available yet ? ○_○

Arlo could give us a free subscription in waiting we can connect avd3001 and avd4001 to a base...

Now I need a camera in addition to save videos on my base !!!  Bravo Arlo!

Furthermore the doorbell does not charge even though it's connected to the wires and the "new" app indicates many times a day that my devices are offline. It's a shame. I sincerelly regret this last purchase. I've bought and used many devices Arlo since 2018 and recommanded it to whoever wants to hear me.

@JamesC

This is some real pristine customer service, I have to say.
Just when I forgot about the feeling of companies ignoring their customers, this place is a crispy reminder.

If the plan is to never adress this matter, just be upfront and let us know.

The firmware to allow 2nd generation cameras to connect to base stations/smarthubs is currently being tested for full release. We expect this phase of the release to be completed soon, allowing users to connect 2nd generation devices to their base station/smarthubs.

I will provide more information as it becomes available.

I just spent a few hours trying to connect my AVD4001 to my VMB4540 , until I finally  found out this isn't possible yet.

Where can we check to see if the update it out? Or are you going to post an update here?

Thanks

Edwin

Will the 2k doorbell be compatible with VMB4540 hub?

Base Station/SmartHub compatibility is now available for Arlo 2nd generation devices. For those that already have your Arlo 2nd generation device onboarded, you will need to remove the device from your Arlo account and re-onboard to see the option to sync with your Base Station/SmartHub. The following firmware or newer is required for this integration.

Compatibility list:
Arlo Essential 2nd Generation Outdoor - VMC2050, VMC2052 – Firmware: 1.5.0_1048_85f53f3
Arlo Essential 2nd Generation Outdoor 2K - VMC3050, VMC3052– Firmware: 1.5.0_1048_85f53f3
Arlo Essential 2nd Generation Indoor - VMC2060 – Firmware: 1.5.0_1048_0e78ae4
Arlo Essential 2nd Generation Indoor 2K - VMC3060 – Firmware: 1.5.0_1048_0e78ae4
Arlo Video Doorbell 2nd Generation - AVD3001 / AVD4001 – Firmware: 1.5.0_1059_eb10395

Compatible Base Station/SmartHub:
Base Station VMB4000 – Firmware: 1.25.0.1_4591_0201bb2
Base Station VMB4500 – Firmware: 1.25.0.1_4541_0201bb2
SmartHub VMB4540 – Firmware: 1.25.0.1_1680_0201bb2
SmartHub VMB5000 – Firmware:  1.25.0.1_1762_0201bb2

I deleted and re-added my 2nd Gen doorbell (wired), but it only connects to wifi. My base is a 4540...any ideas?

I did my 2nd Gen today, and had no problems. I have the base station 4540. The only thing is I did not see when I first started to conect my doorbell it just said wifi. Then I removed my camera and did the star up again and WiFi and base sation was there.

Hope This Helps.

I figured it out. I missed the add to station part. Only saw the Wifi option.

I can confirm this works.

My arlo 2k doorbell connects to my 4540 hub

I had to remove my device and start adding the device all over. There's an option that allows you to connect to a hub.  Also the doorbell camera live feed comes up much faster when it's connected to the hub from my experience.

Thank you Arlo team for releasing this firmware.

When connected to the base station, will the video doorbell actually record video locally without needing the subscription?

It will, but it will have the same limitations as other cameras

  • recordings only available in the app (not my.arlo.com)
  • recordings only available from the primary account (not friend accounts)
  • no thumbnails - you need to download each video to your phone before seeing anything
  • no ability to make manual recordings or snapshots
  • remote access requires router setting changes that many find difficult, and which don't work with some internet service providers.

You also lose other subscription features (smart notifications including package detection, and also activity zones).  Activity zones are often needed on the doorbell, since it usually cannot be repositioned/aimed.

Unfortunately, this has not been my experience.  I was able to remove the Video Doorbell and then add it again, connecting to the base station and that all went smoothly.  On the Video Doorbell camera view, it shows a little USB icon between motion indicator and a musical note icon to the right...  So I assume that's indicating that it should be saving to USB.  And if I go into the device rules and click on the little "i" by "Record a Video" it indeed shows a message that "Video clips or snapshots will be stored in the USB device."

However, despite the fact that several motion alerts have been triggered, it is not recording from the Video Doorbell.  It will record from an older Pro 2 camera in the area, like it always has...  But not the doorbell.

I have checked all the settings, and the doorbell is set to record.  I have also rebooted the Base Station.  But so far, no luck getting it to work.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.  Thanks!

What hub model do you have?  Direct access to the recordings is only supported with the VMB4540 and VMB5000 smarthubs.

Older hubs (VMB4000, VMB4500) support local recording, but do NOT support playback.  The ONLY way to see the recordings with these hubs is to eject the storage using the app, and then plug it into a PC.

Many owners are confused on this, because they assume the recordings they see from their legacy Pro and Pro 2 cameras are being retrieved from their hub.  But these cameras were sold with free 7-day cloud storage, so these recordings are actually being saved in the Arlo Cloud.

@StephenB Thanks for the explanation, that is where the confusion lies.  I assumed, incorrectly, that the free cloud storage was based on the base station itself and not the cameras.  I believe the free cloud storage was able to support up to 5 cameras when I got it.  So I assumed that since I was under that limit, including the video doorbell, it would have been covered by that and functioned similar to the older cameras.  At least I know it doesn't work that way now.

Appreciate the clarification.
