Any one know why on earth the lights dont continue to work if they are disconnected from the bridge? I understand obviously you wouldnt get notifications but it makes no sense that they dont function as security lights if they lose connection.

Because there is no trigger to turn them on.
All of the action is down to controls "back at base", which means somewhere out in the clouds, in your MyArlo account. There is no "intelligence" in the light itself.
To get what you want, go buy some cheap LEDs with a PIR.

Drru2004,
The lights will work if they lose communication with the bridge (for example during a power outage). If communication with the bridge is lost, the Light will utilize the last known active mode.
For more information on this, take a look here: Will my Arlo Security Light still work if I experience a power outage?
