All cameras active but the system is in Standby mode

Hi,

I have two automations configured:

1) at 22:00, switch to Arm Home which just activates all cameras.

2) at 7:00, switch to Standby, which deactivates all cameras.

Now, the time is passed 10 am, and all cameras are active. The status in the app says it is in Standby mode. History says Standby was activated at 7:01.

YET - all cameras detect motion and spews out notifications when we're outside.

Anybody else experienced this and have a workaround?

Have you double-checked the Standby mode, and made sure there are no rules for your cameras in it?

Yes, it was empty.

Now I added all cameras to it, and disabled detection for each one of them, and that seems to have helped. It worked without this previosuly though.

You shouldn't have needed the workaround - cameras are supposed to be disarmed if there is no rule for them in the mode.  So this is a bug.  I'm tagging the mods - @BrookeN , @JamesC , @ShayneS - to call their attention to it.

I have seen some other posters report this, so it is helpful to see your workaround.

Thank you for reporting, has this symptom occurred again since you adjusted your standby mode?

So I can better understand this, and make sure I'm reading it right. You had 0 devices listed in your standby mode and you had to ADD the devices to the standby mode without any rules attached for that mode to function again?

Hello @ShayneS

no, it has not occurred again since I added each camera to the Standby mode.

You are correct that I had 0 devices listed in the Standby mode before.

I use 2 automations: 1 to turn all cameras on by entering Arm Home, and 1 to turn them off by entering Standby mode. This worked fine, until a few days ago where all cameras started detection motion although they were in Standby.

You are also correct that I then added all cameras to the Standby mode and turned off motion detection in the rules for each camera in this mode.

That workaround "solved" the problem.

Regards,

Brian

Hello,

I'm experiencing an issue where my Arlo cameras continue to detect motion even when they’re in standby. It seems like they get stuck in the mode they were in when powered on. For example, if I start them in “Armed Away” mode, they stay in that mode—even if I later switch modes in the app.

As a result, the cameras either always detect motion or never do, regardless of the current mode. My only workaround so far is to manually disable all the cameras through the app when I’m away, which isn’t ideal.

Here’s what I’ve already tried:

  • Logged out and back into my account

  • Deleted and reinstalled the app

  • Factory reset all cameras and reconnected them

  • Factory reset all cameras, switched to another router, and reconnected everything

  • Logged into my Arlo account via browser, deleted devices, and reconnected via the app

  • Removed all cameras from the subscription, then added them back

Phone: Google Pixel 7 Pro
Cameras: 4 Arlo Essential Wire-Free Cameras with Spotlights + 1 Arlo Doorbell with 2nd Gen Chime
Subscription: 4-camera plan

I haven’t been able to find a solution so far. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Are you saying that

  • when you change modes in the app, and then later on come back to the dashboard, you see that the mode didn't change?
  • or that the cameras are detecting motion when the mode is standby?

I detects motion when its in standby mode. Like the picture below you can follow the timeline.

So for example if i restart all my cameras whilst in standby they stay in that mode forever. So they never detect anything even if the app is in arms away. And vice versa, so If i go to the camera settings and restart them while im in arms away mode they keep detecting forever even if im in standby. I can easily change modes in the app, and it notifies me that i changed mode, but its like the cameras are stuck in the same mode forever.

If you have a subscription, then I suggest that you contact Arlo support using the support center in the app.

Be careful on how you explain what is happening, because your wording does create confusion.  "Arm Away", "Arm Home" and "Standby" are NOT modes for individual cameras.  They are modes for the system.

It sounds like you are saying that

  1. when you restart a camera when the system is in "Standby", that the camera remains disarmed even if you change the system mode to "Arm Away" or "Arm Home"
  2. when you restart a camera when the system is in "Arm Home" or "Arm Away", then the camera remains armed even when you change the system mode to "Standby"

Are your cameras connected to an Arlo Hub, or are the connected to your home wifi?  If you use a hub, are you restarting the hub?  Or are you restarting the camera(s)?

Also, what happens if you restart one camera when the system is in Standby, and then switch to Arm Away?   Do all cameras remain disarmed?  Or does only the one camera is disarmed?

Does turning the cameras off and then on again result in the cameras operating properly again?

I have seen some other posters say that their cameras detect motion in "Standby".  That sounds similar to your second issue.  One says that if they modify standby to add rules for each camera that do not notify or record, then the unwanted notifications and recordings stopped.

I haven't seen anyone else reporting anything like your first issue.

Hi ive tried restarting the cameras in different modes, and no matter what they always detect motion.

Ive tried adding the rules to standby mode, but the problem persist.

Its weird. This this i restarted the camera in standby mode and everything worked fine. Then i switched to arms away mode, and the camera detected motion as it should. But when i try and switch back to standby, its like the camera is stuck in motion detect mode.

Ive noticed if i press the cog next to camera it says "This device is idle but available to detect motion, audio, and view live Video."

Also im not using a hub. I have used a hub previously, but i could not get it to work properly, so ive decided to remove it. My cameras have worked properly for a long time without the hub.

I think you should try paid support (using the support center in the app).

Have you tried rebooting the cameras (or the hub, if that's how they're connected)?

Hello Shayne,

Just turned all my cameras and doorbell back on. And everything seems to run perfect as before. Didnt need to reset, log out or anything.

The update is much appreciated!👍🏼
