I just bought the Arlo Q camera from Costco. My camera is definitely still having this issue. When I set up the zones to not include the street, I still kept getting non-stop notifcations. So, I searched the problem and found that this has been an issue since 2016. I am using the camera inverted.
First I inverted the picture, then set up zones and set up in modes. Non-stop alarms.... Then I uninvereted and tried best I could to re-set zones on a PC using Chrome. It took a couple tried because the camera seemed a bit confused. The zones do not invert with the picture, and what is even worse is that I am still getting non-stop alarms even when the cars are on the other side of the street and nowhere near the zone.... So, then I tried to invert, delete zones, and recreate zones again. I keep getting "Invalid message syntax" error....
very frustrating and not useful....
Firmware version 1.8.3.1_14872

You're right, zones don't invert nor do they stay the same size when using the zoom. Best practice is to set the camera the way you want and then set the zones - works fine here.
Since you're getting an error message, I would rest the camera back to non-inverted, remove all zones and zoom. Power cycle the camera. Log out and back in. Set the invert up and verify proper operation. Set the zoom if needed. Then set your zones and save. If that doesn't work, remove the camera from Settings, My Devices. Press the reset button on the camera until the LED flashes amber and resync. That should clear out any weirdness.

sigh....a lot of these retail home security products are great in theory but really poor execution ... you just waste all of your life trying to get them to work like they're supposed to.....

It should be as simple as how I described it and as you expect. It might be worth swapping the set at the store or opening a case with support here.
