Does the base station need to be permanently connected to the router by ethernet cable ?

Does the base station need to be permanently connected to the router by ethernet cable ?  Does it not connect by wifi ?

The base needs an ethernet connection to function.  It can be direct to the router or can be in an wifi extender that has a port. 

The base creates a wifi network to talk to the cameras only. The base itself will not connect by wifi
