I have run longer USB cables and use a different plug to power my cameras. I understand that the power supply (5v only) will not charge the cameras but it provides enough power to operate camera. I figured that the camera would use power if available rather than the battery. This is not the case. When plugged in with the battery installed it uses the battery and then when the battery drains down it shuts the camera off. To remedy this I removed the batteries and use only the plug in power source. This seems like flawed logic to me. Is it possible that a firmware update could fix this.

A properly working camera and charger won't do that. It will ALWAYS run off the charger, not the battery. Sounds like you have a faulty camera and should open a case with support here.
