I am receiving notifications on the app but when I try to open it, it tells me the app requires update. I click ok and it just takes me to the App Store. There is no update. There are no updates under my apps either.

Older phone/OS? Check the requirements for the latest app - perhaps your phone can't be supported. Use the web client instead, setting the browser to use the desktop version of the site.
