Well if you buy this camera your actually RENTING it. Without a Subscription it wont record even to Local Storage when connected thru a smart hub.

Returned 2 of them.

Look like Arlo has lost its way.

Selling the rest of my Arlo collection while they still work

8 Pro 2s, 3 Pros, Door bell, chime, 2 base stations, 2 lights and bridge.

as soon as my new cameras get delivered.

Bye Arlo. Its been a long ride -2015 to present.

@Robalboa what are your new cameras?  From Australia, I am looking for cameras that are:

  • NOT Chinese brand (security concern)
  • NOT requiring subscription
  • offering common sense basic features (live, alert, time-based automation, geo-based automation, local recording)

Hi @Robalboa

Can you provide more detail regarding the symptom you are experiencing? I will do my best to assist.

I think I can answer that for @Robalboa , since I already finished my grump in this earlier post .

Basically: while anyone would assume "local hub storage and no subscription" = "I can click a record button anytime and the footage is stored locally", ARLO has cheated by allowing ONLY motion/sound triggered footage stored locally --- while giving the false hope impression on the packaging that "you can store locally using the $marthub".

Meaning: if I am watching a camera LIVE and it is not turned on for the current mode, there is no way I can record this live to local storage.

So can't see plates over 30 feet.

I read they removed email notifications.

So you only get access to notifications if you have a subscription also?

Notifications do not require a subscription.

this is only partial information.  Do we have a list of what will be missing, without subscription?  Say:

  • the convenience of viewing recordings --- since local recording means
    • you need to be an IT expert to set up VPN or port forwarding otherwise you won't be able to play the video when not at home network
    • all family members MUST login the same master account to be able to play locally recorded videos
  • capability of instant live recording (and the lack of it makes "local recording" less useful)

I am sure there are more.

Well, I said "some".

I frequently include the restrictions on local storage in my replies, but didn't list them in this one. That is because @CJ10847283 wasn't specifically asking about local storage.

Most of them are in the KB article, but they are scattered, so easy to miss.

The limitations I generally list include

  • recordings are only accessible in the app (not my.arlo.com)
  • recordings are only accessible from the primary account (not friend accounts)
  • no thumbnails, videos need to be downloaded to your phone before you can view them
  • no ability to make manual recordings or take snapshots
  • remote access requires router setting changes that many find difficult (and which will not work with some internet service providers)
