the system seems to do whatever it wants (battery life is depleted, alarm goes of unnecessarily) so we stopped the subscrition. limited possibility is the setting .

Are you using both motion and audio alerts?
Is the issue that the motion is triggering too often?
FWIW, the subscription is required to get phone support from Arlo. If it is still active, you might try getting that. Note you access it using the support center in the app.
