Direct Access to local storage is outlined here: https://kb.arlo.com/000062337/What-is-Direct-Storage-Access-and-how-do-I-use-it
Limitations are
- You can only access recordings from the app (not the browser)
- You can only access recordings from the primary account (not friend accounts)
- You cannot make manual recordings or snapshots
- There are no thumbnails
- Remote access requires router setting changes that some find difficult (either a VPN or port forwarding).
You'll also lose activity zones if your cameras are running on battery (or solar panels).

Can you clarify your question?
Are you asking about retention? Or something else?
Also, are you talking about local recording to a USB drive or microSD card on the hub? Or about Arlo's cloud storage?
If local recording, then what base station/smarthub model do you have?
