Hey everyone,

I have an Arlo VM4000r3 base with a mix of Arlo 2, Pro 3 and Pro 4 cameras. The base and Arlo 2s were a bundle purchased a little over 2 years ago. The Pro 3 and 4 cameras were added about 3 months ago. We started getting subscription expiration notifications the past week (never had a Paid subscription) and the Pro 3 and Pro 4 videos have stopped appearing in our library, but the original Arlo 2 camera videos are all showing up fine (and are accessible over the internet). I do not have a USB thumb drive attached.

Is a subscription now required for the newer cameras? I'm confused as to why the older camera videos are continuing to work as normal. I don't see any settings on the camera settings in the app to tell where the recorded videos are to be sent.

If I add local storage to my base, does that mean videos will only be accessible when I am on my home network? I was under the impression that when I open the Library within the app, it's connecting to my base over the internet.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

The newer cameras require a paid subscription plan to use the arlo cloud storage/services once the trial subscription expires.

The pro2 cameras were the last cameras to be bundled with the arlo free 7days cloud storage.

You would need to get a arlo smart hub 4540/5000 to access direct local storage with basic features.

The 4000 Base can backup triggered recordings to the USB backup storage but can only be viewed on a pc using the the removed USB.

No, that is not the case.  The videos in Library are all stored in the Arlo Cloud.

The VMB4000 base supports local recording, but it does not support playback.  The only way to see the locally stored videos is to eject the USB storage and connect it to a PC.

Arlo Pro and Pro 2 cameras were sold with 7 days of free cloud storage.  Arlo stopped offering that feature on new cameras models 5 years ago.  All the currently sold cameras require a subscription for cloud storage.

The base has no internal storage - local recordings require that you connect a thumb drive (or perhaps a small external USB hard drive) that is at least 16 GB (and no more than 2 TB).  A thumb drive is more convenient (and I find 128 GB gives me more than enough storage).

Direct access to the local videos would require you to replace the base with a VMB4540 or VMB5000 smarthub.

The experience isn't great (IMO intentionally crippled), and better suited to a backup than a subscription substitute.

Limitations include

  • Videos only available in the primary account (not friend accounts)
  • Videos only available in the app (not my.arlo.com)
  • No ability to take snapshots or manual recordings
  • No thumbnails - everything needs to be downloaded to the phone to view.
  • Remote Access requires router setting changes that many find difficult (and which won't work with some internet service providers).
