I have 2 cameras running. 1st one is closer to the base, 2nd further away in the house. While the 2nd connects seamlessly with my smartphone app and does perfect motion detection, 1st one always loses contact, takes very long to contact at all and I can't be sure about motion detection. What can I do? Is it possible, that one of the two is defect?

This is generally a symptom of a connectivity issue between the camera and the base station/SmartHub. Try moving your base station/SmartHub as far away from your router as possible. Elevating it may also help improve signal strength and reduce potential WiFi interference.
Test again to see if you experience the same behavior.
