Night vision is poor. How to display clear daytime colored images?

How much lighting or how close do I need to have the cameras display clear daytime colored images? Lighting is poor in my area, not much street lights.

The color is auto switched to b/w as light falls off.... in order to have color at night, you need quite a bit of lighting...

thats the reason for the IR illuminators in the low lit areas
