I have a VMB4000r3 base station that has a 1TB WD drive plugged into it for local storage.
It used to be a 128GB flash drive, but I replaced it with this hard drive. Point being, I've never had any issue with it.
Last week the base station started giving me an error on all the devices saying "IO Error: There was an error writing to USB Device." I thought the drive had probably gone bad so I replaced it with a different WD drive, though it was the same size (1TB).
I am still getting the same error. Rebooting the base station will let it work for about 30 minutes, but then it starts again. After a reboot, I am able to manually record a camera and it actively writes to the drive, so I know the drive is good.
The base station is on version 1.21.0.0_4280_a58d08a and is telling me that there are no new updates.
I've included images of the base station after a reboot, then another about 40 minutes later. You can see that it recognizes the drive but then stops all together.

Im experiencing the same error. Ive tried 3 different USB drives, but they always get the IO error after a couple of days.
When I plug the USB drives into a computer then the drive is working fine and I can view all the recorded material up until the time or the error.

I'm having the same issue. I've been utilizing a 1TB drive without issue until recently. Thinking my hard drive failed, I replaced it with thumb drives. The thumb drives will work for several hours before an I/O error message.

Hardware: Arlo Ultra SmartHub
Firmware: 1.21.0.0_1409_a58d08a - Latest Version
Micro SD Card Used: SanDisk 1TB Extreme microSDXC (https://a.co/d/iWPKTBU) - Formated Fat32
iOS App Ver: 4.4 (6186) - Latest Version
Noticed my Arlo stopped recording video (ZERO communication/ alerts on that one, thanks Arlo) just gave me an error of “SD Card is Corrupted - The detected SD Card is corrupted and needs to be formatted”. Now I had this error with a 512 GB Micro SD card and decided to upgrade to a bigger drive and now I’m getting this error again.
What's also odd is that I can go back to past days and play all the videos from my Arlo Ultra SmartHub I just can't make new recordings. Arlo what gives, why am I getting any of these errors??

CHECKING BACK IN:
So I ordered another 1TB Micro SD Card (https://a.co/d/gwpwI4Q) thinking some how the other 1TB SD Card (https://a.co/d/0PxJ2na) I ordered April of this year (2023) went bad. After formatting it for Fat32, added it to my Arlo Ultra SmartHub and after an hour I get the SD Card corrupted again. THESE SD CARDS ARE $120+ a POP and now I have two that don’t work, my property is left unsecured almost as week, this is absolutely unacceptable!!
RESEARCH:
So it seems other are having this issues as well. Keep reading it gets more interesting…

ARLO HAS A HISTORY:
This isn’t the first time Arlo has done this to it’s users in regards of destroying users recordings and hardware.

“Okay, so I think I found the problem. The firmware was updated last night on the VMB5000 and this apparently has broken local recordings. Here is the link to the firmware change log.
https://community.arlo.com/t5/Firmware-Release-Notes/Arlo-SmartHub-VMB5000-1-20-4-0-1367-38740e8-12-...
It only mentions bug fixes. But, it introduced a new bug! How in the world am I supposed to make ARLO aware of this? Do they even read this board? This is extremely frustrating as I have paid them hundreds of dollars for this setup and they are the ones that have broken it. If someone has a way to contact an Arlo engineer, please help!”

“he firmware fix for this issue is now available. Please restart your Base Station/SmartHub to receive the update. It may take a few minutes after the restart for your system to complete the firmware installation.
Alternatively, you will automatically receive the firmware update overnight.
Thank you for your patience while we worked to resolve this issue.
Firmware version with the fix (reference your base station/SmartHub model VMBXXXX)
VMB5000-1.20.4.1_1373_d606780
VMB4540-1.20.4.1_1311_d606780

It get’s even weirder, look at a solution on how to fix this issue:

“A workaround has been mentioned that may work for you: Plug the drive into a computer. Check the various numbered folders to see how many files are in each. If greater than 512 (seems like an arbitrary number) delete files to get to 512. Apparently there can be 513 which somehow causes the issue. After deleting to get to 512 in each folder, it should work again.”
WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE:
Ok Arlo you’re not fooling anyone with this. All of these “bugs” are there to frustrate the user into buying your cloud subscription and it’s grossly obvious. I’ve lost over $250+ on 1TB Micro SD Cards on top of your Fisher-Price product becoming a tech time vampire stressing me, costing me monies, loss of videos I NEEDED!!. Now that I see other users are facing the same issue, data loss and hardware damage by your companies neglect and shady business practices. IF YOU DO NOT ADDRESS THIS ISSUE HERE WITHIN 24 HOURS I WILL BE SEEKING LEGAL ACTION. THIS IS NOT A GAME, ADDRESS THIS ISSUE NOW!

I have been experiencing the same IO error on my USB storage for 3 weeks now.
I have formatted the USB stick via the hub, and on my computer, I have tried a different USB stick and have even removed the cameras from the hub and re-added them.
Each time the local recording only work for a short time then the IO error re-occurs.
My Arlo system has been useless for 3 weeks now. It seemed to occur after updating the hub firmware.
Hub:
Firmware 1.21.0.2_1391_8a519c8
Hardware VMB4540r2
Cameras:
Firmware 1.060.13.0_23_19c4503
Hardware H9
Does anyone know if you can roll back the hub firmware?

I don't know if you can roll back firmware or not as I don't believe my initial issue was related to an update.
I'm going on 1 month of this problem and while the cynic in me thinks Arlo caused this issue on purpose to drive more users to their subscription model, I'd like to give them the benefit of the doubt and wait to see if this was unintended and fixable through an update.
Edit: It may have been an update as I found this related post
