I have an external hard drive hooked up to my bad station and it says it's connected and recording to it but I can't view the videos. Am I missing where you can switch between cloud and local storage or do I have to disconnect the drive and plug it into my PC? Thanks

With your base station VMB4000, you will need to manually insert the flash drive in to a computer to view the recordings. The new Arlo SmartHub (VMB5000 or VMB4540) support the new feature "Direct Storage Access". I will attach the link to this feature in case you are interested - What is Direct Storage Access and how do I use it?
