I switched to the new Arlo software and this was a downgrade. Can someone tell me how to keep the cameras active? I can turn the cameras on a watch a particular area and then turn them off, but if I want to keep them on, I get a message that says the cameras must be wired. They will not connect while on battery power as in the old application. This is a terrible change. I only use battery power. None of my cameras are wired.

This sounds like you have activity zones set up. Zones are processed by the servers when battery-powered which requires a subscription. AC powered cameras can process the zones in-camera. If zones are the issue, remove them and the message will go away.
