Is anyone recording onto a microSD? Do you need to be part of the subscription service to do that? It looks like you can overwrite the oldest data. How long does your card last and what size is it? Thank you in advance for your help!

I use a micro-SD card in my VMB5000. I do have a subscription but this feature does not need one. There's a setting for overwriting oldest data when the card is full which I have set but never used since I copy off all videos each month and format the card again for the new month (YMMV). I happen to have a 128GB card installed but smaller ones will hold a lot of videos depending on your needs/usage. Since I have 11 cameras connected to the hub with varying settings I can get a lot of videos but I believe I haven't seen more than 20GB in a month. Some cameras are set to record for 1 minute while others are set to record until motion stops so typically get 12-15 seconds, making the videos relatively small. I know this is different from your Go 2 but hopefully gives you some info for a choice.
Depending on how many recordings you think you'll be getting, a 64GB card would be a reasonable start. Monitor how fast it fills and decide from there.

The internal local storage in the Go 2 doesn't require a subscription. But the only way to access that storage is to take down the camera, remove the microSD card, and connect it to a PC for viewing. The direct access to local storage features that are in the VMB4540 and VMB5000 smarthubs are not available in the Go 2.
