I purchased the Arlo essential spotlight cam for my front porch of my new home. When testing the mount location today, I felt like there wasn’t an ideal location to put it that could capture my long, narrow front porch. Like the camera angle isn’t wide enough to cover enough area if at a height to get faces. And if put at a height to cover more area, you’re just getting tops of heads. I read over the help article and it seems like I’m following the advice they give, but it still doesn’t seem like it’s the right angle to be effective.

I chose this over the doorbell cam because there isn’t a wooden frame around my door to mount a doorbell cam, but I’m wondering if I got back the drawing board. Any advice?

It's possible that you need multiple cameras to get good coverage of the entire porch.  I use two to cover mine.  I mount one along the narrow edge of the porch, and one along the long edge.  Both are aimed towards the door, but they also do cover the front windows.

As far as height goes, my porch is roofed, and I put the cameras on the beams for the roof, pointing downwards.  That's approximately 8 feet above the porch floor.

These cameras have an amazingly wide angle of view. My front porch is long and narrow, and is L shaped.

I mounted my vmc2030 at the corner of the L about 1 foot from the ceiling (about 6½ foot in the air

Thx for sharing!

I agree they have a wide angle of view.  My own porch isn't enclosed, is fairly narrow, and runs along the entire front of the house.  A camera under the shorter porch eaves can see the entire porch, but the distance is too far to get reliable motion estimation at both the door and the house windows.  So I use two.
