I have a general fear about this system.
I'm concerned, if I go for a more extensive system in a few years, all of this hardware will become completely useless.
Does the hardware have any compatibility beyond the "system" at all? Can they be used as web cams or be useful in other ways? Or are they only functional within the Arlo ecosystem?
Thanks!

The question that you asked is a yrs and no answer. Ther Arlo cameras are designed to work within their own ecosystem, but since it is cloud based with IFTT functionality. This island ecosystem can have user designed bridges that enable communication with other ecosystems.
