Is there a feature either in the smartphone app or web app to download multiple files as a single zip file? Every time I select multiple files for download, each and every file creates a separate download dialog box, making mutliple downloads of a single day's files very unwieldy.

Nope. That would a server end feature and there's no such thing at the moment - one at a time is it. You could add a post in the Suggestions forum (or whatever it's called - look on the right-hand side of these pages for the link). The more kudos it gets the more likely it would be to get implemented.
I use a Python script to automatically download all videos daily into a dedicated directory structure. Once set up, it's all done with no interaction so the issue of tagging and downloading is moot.
