We have just set up our first camera. We are finding that motion is not being detected immediately.  I have the sensitivity setting at max. This is rather annoying. Any suggestions? Is there something we have forgotten to do in the set up?

Read around the hundreds of posts on this forum regarding your question. Unfortunately there is a substantial delay between detecting and recording of motion. Seems like the average is about 3+ seconds. As your browsing for answers you will see several suggestions ranging from camera angle location to location of base unit. Although you may see ever so slight improvement by following these suggestions you will always have considerable motion detection delays.

Considerable is relative.  Some, like myself, generally have a couple of seconds befor erecording starts while others have much more, in the 10 second area.  I can't explain the difference other than 1) the exact positioning of the cameras where having the motion detected on the edges of the field of view seems to work better and/or 2) differences in the cameras themselves.  Maybe I got a "hot" setup while others haven't...

your not alone Jeff...  mine is fairly short, under 2 sec even straight on

One trick to help the edges of the pir is in two locations I cropped the total view by about 5%... now I appear just as I enter the view of the camera..to the point there is really no delay visable.

Here is what I was told by the Netger ARLO rep for why the recording takes so long to start once the cameras get triggered:

"Please be informed that this is how the ARLO cameras operate since ARLO is a server based system. There is really a delay in recording since every activity of the ARLO system will be forwarded to our back end servers. Faster upload speed usually decreases the delay in recording. We also recommend alternate motion recording to some of our customers and it addressed this issue. Alternate motion recording means that if the 1st camera detects the motion then the 2nd camera will record it and vice versa. "

Good try NetGear.

If you add the short motion detector range with the delay in transmission to the server you get a substantially reduced response time to recording.  As a result I was easily able to defeat the detection capabilities of this system via a casual walk through the detection field.  I think it's a great approach with some very nice features, but needs some re-engineering of the sensor and transmission delay to make it a more reactive system.  Unfortunately, I'm taking mine back to the store.  I'll wait for a future version when hopefully they worked out these limitations.

All the best in your future upgrades!
