I am having a hard time getting my camera to pick up movement in an area where the camera is about 15 ft from what I am trying to cover.  Unfortunately, I have few options as to where I can put a camera for that area.   If I zoom into the area I am trying to cover, does the pan and zoom app change the way the camera picks up movement and records?

No,  the pan and zoom only effects the shown viewing area. The PIR thats senses motion still cover s the original field of view.

For what it's worth, initially, I had mounted my camera inside a room looking out through a window, at the area that I wanted to monitor, because of the glass- the motion sensor would not work.

(You didn't mention whether or not there was a window involved.)

Once I moved the camera outside- the motion detection worked- that is, until I had to change the batteries.

I had to remove the camera from the tree where the I mounted the camera. I'm having trouble duplicating the original set up.

There is a diagram at the Arlo website which addresses the most efficient camera position by which one must mount the camera in order to maximize the camera's motion detection feature.

I had to rotate my camera 90 degrees (1/4 turn) in order for the objects to pass from left to right, or from top to bottom, in the direction that the cameras detectors are most efficient.
