I just installed 4 arlo cameras. The last 2 days no recordings, not even family coming and going. Do I have to leave the app open on my phonevor my home computer in order for recording to take place?

No.  Check the running men for each camera in the Cameras tab.  Are they gray or black?  If they're gray, the cameras are disarmed and won't record.  Go to the Mode tab, select your camera by clicking on it and set a mode like Armed.  It would be a good idea to create your own custom modes there, too.
