Is Arlo a toy rather than a security system?

Evidently Arlo utilizes internet connection, which means the gateway router must be on.  Since base unit to router connection is not wireless, but via USB, the base unit must be located within a few feet from the gateway router, unless one acquires a wireless extender it would appear plugging a wireless adapter into one of the USB ports is not an option).  Finally, when the power goes off, so does Arlo unless the base unit and the router(s) are on a power back-up system(s).

In addition, accessing Cloud from a cellphone can be expensive and does not work at all where and when there is no coverage.

Summing it all up, one would think it pretty lame using Arlo as a security system only to pay for providing an opportunity of hacking into the system via a poorly, if at all, protected cell phone.

Any comments?  I would love to be proved wrong on all counts.

The Arlo system was not designed to be a full security system and as such it's not.  But, it does fill in some holes as an add-on to a home security system.

It works very well doing what it does, wireless, waterproof, good range, easy to install, etc... No it does not record 24/7 and if thats what you want, Arlo isn't for you.

The base doesn't connect by USB to the router , but by ethernet cable. The max distance usable by ethernet is 100 meters. so the base doesn't have to be located near your router/switch ( or use an extender as mention )

And if there is no coverage for you cell phone, it doesn't matter...you phone isn't going to work. Even with a full alram system that dials police they can't reach you so you wouldn't know... thats why Arlo allows multiple emails addresses/text messgs for others that may be able to respond to an alert while your away.
