Am I missing something, or can I not direct the footage to a local ftp server? I have plenty of hard drive storage, I don't need to rent netgear's.
Do these use 12v, as the 3v batteries connected in series would suggest? Or is there a voltage regulator/ downstep converter that converts to 5v on the board? They constantly die and refuse to connect again, and I'm planning to convert them to use a laptop brick spliced into an unused cat6 cable. Yes, I know that will void my warranty, no I don't care that it will void my warranty - can someone answer any of these questions?
Any help will save me a lot of time and will be greatly appreciated.

First, you have no choice...the cameras will ONLY link to the Arlo base and the base only sends the data stream to their servers and then back.
There is no access to the arlo base.
The camera does NOT use 12v, but 2 sets of 3v cells in parallel ( those cells are 3.2v when new ) so it runs on 6v+ to 8v+ ( if on rechargeable )
There are threads on this on the board, search is your friend !
