What is the range for the motion detection?

ARLO VMS3130

What’s the range for motion on this? Motion detection was working fine and notifications were being sent to our phones no problem until we mounted the cameras externally.

This section is for the indoor Q cameras - you seem to be referencing the original Arlo wireless cameras. These have a detection range of ~20 feet for people. That implies your sensitivity is set appropriately in your modes and rules.
