Second Base Station must be connected directly to router?

Does the second base station have to be connected directly to the router, or can it be connected through Ethernet, to a switch, which is connected to the router that the first base station is directly connected to?

A switch is really extra ports ...so a second base can be hooked into a switch as long as it has internet connections...

Also some have used wifi extenders with Ethernet ports to add a second base
