Recording starts about 3 seconds after motion detection.  Someone can walk across the driveway open the fence to the backyard and be in the backyard before the recording starts.  I've got a day full of videos of showing simply open gates and closed gates with nobody as I walked in and out of the backyard.

I tested again thinking it was maybe sensitivity settings... changed sensitivity to 98% and walked back and forth in FOV about 10 feet away.  It's constantly about 3 seconds late in recording.  I can make it all the way across the FOV and barely catch myself exiting...

This is useless if I can't catch anyone walking across the driveway and into the backyard or the garage!!

That's why there are threads upon threads of questions and answers, not to mention FAQs, about this. It's all about positioning and battery life.  The camera has to wake up and create the connection to the server before it can start recording.  Your 3 second delay is about the best you can get so it's a matter of getting the camera aimed properly or maybe using another camera to trigger this one in nested rules.

Basically, the camera should only monitor the small area of interest, not a large scene.  Motion should be across the FOV, not directly at it, and start at or near an edge.  Post screenshots for specific recommendations.

So, here is my small area of interest, not a large scene.  Motion is across the FOV, not directly at it, and starts at an edge.

I can walk across it or come in through the gate and in the  back door... this one happens to be after i walked in the gate and in the back door...

Here's the path the painters took all day in and out of the backyard... every now and then you catch a persons hand on the gate.

So if the motion detection range on a good day with full batteries is about 20 feet and I can cover 15-16 feet at a casual stroll... at best I've got span of about two feet of movement that should get captured.  Now degrade your batteries a month and throw in a camera position that is not 100% optimal...

The only way I'm going to catch anyone on this camera is if they stop and stand around for a while... or I buy another one and put it further away to trigger the one I really want to catch people on?!  Sounds like the default kit should come with a standalone motion sensor instead of needing me to drop an extra $150 to get a base kit to work as expected.

The first picture shows a location that would be a problem. Assuming the gate is the black metal-looking bar that shows near the left side,  I'd try mounting the camera to the eave near the downspout. Your scene actually is kinda large - you really want to get the gate more than the yard.

The second d picture seems like you should get more detection but perhaps it's a combination of the distance and the vector being used by the painters. Again trying g to focus more on the gate could be useful.

It's all trial and error and is limited by the ability to mount the cameras appropriately. Lack of something to mount them on could mean it's not gonna work for you, at least not in these situations.

And the other problem that goes with this is that by the time I get the notification on my phone, the app opens and connects and shows a picture the person is usually gone from my front door and I just have to wait for the 25s recording to finish so I can find out what just happened.  I'm not sure how the new 2 way voice is going to work with this.

Can you point us to these rules we can nest?  IFTTT motion camera1 -> record camera2 fails miserably

Ok.  I found the "rules" in the mode category.  This is fine for Arlo only devices set in a single Arlo Base as they are MODE related rules.  This does not allow cross multi base or Arlo-Q rule/motion triggering.  IFTTT supposedly works here, but it is hit or miss.

You're quite correct about rules spanning base stations or Q cameras. There are posts in the suggestions forum that you can add kudos to to hopefully bring this about.
