Port forwarding is broken, I’m sure it was working for remote access but it is just showing ‘not available’. .

I can access footage remotely using my VPN but that’s not the point.  Checked visibility of the port on canuseeme and it’s not open, rules deleted and added again but no joy still.

anyone else

It’s now working, I’ve changed nothing, really strange.

Which points to your ISP or maybe your router,  not Arlo.

Is it possible your ISP just changed you over to CGNAT (carrier grade NAT)?  Check your WAN IP address, and see if it is between 100.64.0.0. and 100.127.255.255.  That is the range assigned to CGNAT.  Carrier grade NAT doesn't allow port forwarding.

Maybe also double-check that IP address you are forwarding to.   Your router will sometimes change the local IP address it assigns to the smarthub (unless you have reserved that address in the router settings).

If you aren't now using CGNAT and if the smarthub IP address is correct in the forwarding rule, then I suggest rebooting the router, and then rebooting the smarthub.

IMO, VPN access is the most secure method for remote access.  I use my VPN for this myself, and haven't set up port forwarding.

Definitely not CGNAT.  I also have several other port forwarding rules set up for other services such as my VPN server, Plex and others and all those are working just fine.  I’ve had Arlo port forwarding working fine but can’t really remember the last time I accessed local storage remotely.  I’ve assigned my base station a static IP and checked again, removed and reconfigured, changed the port, all sorts to no avail.

Me too.  But canuseeme says the port is closed - so the problem isn't Arlo's.  It could be your ISP, or maybe something strange in your router.
