Also night vision is not good at all - I have the setting on Night Vision - what else can be done - I don't see anywhere else to make any change

Night vision on a battery-operated camera is going to be for up close and personal, not for much distance.  There are IR spotlights you can get off Amazon (make sure they're 850nm versions) that will provide much greater illumination but those are all powered.

Oh darn - one reason why I brought it was because it stated they were good re night vision

It all depends on the distance. If the subject is within say 10 feet, it will be reasonably good.
