If i turn off the motion activation is this the same as turning the cameras off to save battery power or do I need to do something else?

That's as close to powering off as you can get short of removing batteries.  It's in a very low power state so battery life is virtually unaffected.  Very low use cameras run for many months (approaching a year).

Either using the Disarmed mode or the On/Off switch in Settings, My Devices, your camera will prevent the camera from activating so will be in sleep mode.
