I need to monitor a road which is several hundred meters away from the closest place I can put my Arlo camera. The wide angle Arlo lenses just don't give me enough detail. What I need is some kind of glass optical lens that I can put over the front of the camera lens to give me 5x or 10x or more zoom. I realise that the infra red would no longer work, but presumably the camera would still pick up movements.
Has anyone got any suggestions as to what could work?

Arlo is the wrong camera for that usage. I've long wanted a camera with a longer focal length but that simply doesn't seem to be in the cards.

Not from the road. The camera uses a passive infrared (PIR) sensor that has a range of about 20-25 feet. Vehicles often are picked up farther away (j think the spec is assuming people). But the motion detection range won't be extended if you were to add an additional lens.
I agree with @jguerdat that Arlo doesn't have a good solution for what you are trying to do.
