Currently, I have a few nest cams. I wanted to add more cameras but didn't want to pay for Nest again so I'm debating between the Arlo Essential 2 or the Arlo Pro 5s 2K. I used to have Arlo a long time ago but I'm sure if they changed their methods. Essential 2 seems to have no security wire and needs to be removed so it can be charged as opposed to the Pro 5s which have replaceable batteries. Are there any other important differences? Is Arlo still 7 days free of recording or is there a subscription now for cloud recording?

All currently sold cameras require a subscription for cloud recording.

Not sure what you mean by "security wire".  If you meant the total security mount, then there is no equivalent for the Gen 2.

The Essential Gen 2 cameras all are fully sealed, and have no user-replaceable batteries.

  1. Price obviously.
  2. Field of view is wider with the Pro 5s (160 degrees instead of 130)
  3. 2-way talk is full duplex with the Pro 5s
  4. The Gen 2s don't support homekit yet (and base station support is just now being rolled out).
  5. Spec'd motion range is a bit further for the Pro 5s (7.5m vs 7m).
  6. Spotlight spec is brighter for the Gen 2 (42 Lux vs 25).
  7. Image sensor is slightly bigger on the Gen 2 (~0.37 vs ~0.33)
  8. The Gen2 cameras are shorter, and do not support the magnetic mount.
  9. The Pro 5s is dual band, the Gen 2 are 2.4 Ghz only
